Automation Group

Science and technology are strategic areas in Mexico; Automation is a multidisciplinary, scientific-practical area that allows generating and applying new knowledge in the solution of real problems in the industry, automatic control, Mechatronics, robotics, communications, instrumentation, etc. Automation implies technological modernization not only in the quality of life of society but also in the productive capacity of a country that allows it to achieve international competitiveness in a globalized environment.

We are a consolidated research group in the area of exact sciences applied to the development of technology. Our knowledge includes: research, design and instrumentation of electronic systems and automation of processes for their application in various fields, both scientific and technological, contemplating the theoretical-practical modeling of systems electronics applied to robotics, high energy particle physics, quantum optics, health and other technological-science areas, in addition to the development and instrumentation of control, electronic and mechanical elements for process automation. Scientific research is carried out in the areas of robotics and control, focused mainly on parametric identification, design of control schemes for regulation, trajectory and visual servoing, as well as construction and development of robots manipulators whose object of study in automatic control offers a wide spectrum in the formulation of problems of theoretical practical character because of its multivariate nature, nonlinear and strongly coupled. It is also among our competencies the development of mechatronic systems with scientific, industrial and commercial applications. In particular, dynamic modeling and control schemes with stability-Lyapunov approach, image processing and digital signals, teleoperated systems, unmanned aircraft, and adaptive control are developed.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS

European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN)

There has been an active participation in an international experiment being developed at the European Nuclear Research center known as CERN. Specifically in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in one of his experiments that is ALICE, developing electronics for the cosmic ray Detector ACORDE.

ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment at CERN) is a general-purpose heavy-ion detector designed to study the physics of strongly interacting matter and the quark-gluon plasma in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC. The ALICE Cosmic Ray Detector (ACORDE) will provide the cosmic ray trigger (CRT), a level-zero trigger signal generated when atmospheric muons impinge upon the ACORDE scintillator array. This signal will be useful for calibration, alignment and performance of several ALICE tracking detectors, mainly the TPC, TOF, TRD and HMPID. The cosmic ray trigger signal will be capable to deliver a signal before and during the operation of the LHC beam. The typical rate for single atmospheric muons crossing the ALICE Cavern will be less than 5Hz/m2. ACORDE, together with some other ALICE tracking detectors, will provide precise information on cosmic rays with primary energies around eV. The energy threshold of cosmic muons arriving to the ALICE hall is approximately 17 GeV, while the upper energy limit for reconstructed muons will be less than 2 TeV, depending of the magnetic field intensity (up to 0.5T).

It is known in the international scientific community that the program of the LHC of CERN are going to be in the forefront of High Energy Physics for the next ten years and it is great that Mexico is making history along with the other participating countries. The large Ion collider experiment known for its English acronym ALICE (A large ion Collider experiment) is currently initiating the integration of its detectors; the collaboration of researchers in this experiment is composed of 1000 members of 86 Institutions in 29 countries.

The detector Alice has been specially designed to analyze a particular state of matter, called plasma of quarks and gluons, which it is believed there was just after the creation of the Universe. After the participation in the ACORDE detector, now, our main activity within this important branch of science is designing and implementing electronic systems for particle detectors, as is the case of the detector called TPC (Time Proyection Chamber) which is the main detector in the ALICE experiment, it is composed of multiple detectors called GEM. A GEM (electron gas multiplier) is made of a plate (50 microns) on sheet of kapton, a coating of copper in each side, perforated superficial, each one that acts as a channel of multiplication of electrons. It is needed to develop an electronic circuit that serves for monitorear every channel of the GEMs to register the changes of current of the detector. It was designed and instrument a digital ammeter to withstand the high voltage as it has to be connected in series with the source of high voltage and the GEM.

As an important result of this collaboration were published 20 articles indexed in the year 2014, 25 articles indexed in the year 2015, 12 articles indexed in the 2016 and 13 articles indexed in the year 2017. Collaborating with the most important detector of the experiment ALICE has allowed us to be part of the collaboration and obtain (from 2014 to 2017) 70 articles indexed in the JCR.

In the year 2014 a thematic network was created in CONACYT with the name Mexican scientific and technological network for ALICE LHC, of which Dr. Sergio Vergara Limon is responsible for the Advanced Electronics Laboratory and where we are collaborating as a working group. Because this important international collaboration requires the design of highly specialized electronic instrumentation, the experience that has allowed me to be part of it has generated five patent titles.
